Rock, Race, & Elvis

With copious musical examples, John Alston will show that Rock & Roll grew out of Black Rhythm & Blues but that Elvis’ style, while owing much to Black music, is decidedly different and belongs to a subgenre of Rock & Roll called Rockabilly. Toward the end of the lecture, the audience will listen to recordings and vote to decide the degree of Rock & Roll-ness. Because even if you can’t articulate the musical characteristics, your body will know when it wants to rock. Attendees are welcome to a complimentary reception with John beginning at 3:30 p.m. More Info below.
