Join the artist Nekisha Durrett and the Bryn Mawr Community for a special celebration and twilight unveiling of the “Don't Forget to Remember (Me)” campus monument. The artwork will be on full display and illuminated publicly for the first time.Immediately following the unveiling, light dessert will be served.Featuring poets and performances [hidden] Cissokho, a 72nd generation kora player from Senegal who has performed solo all over Africa, Europe, and the United States, in cities such as Paris, New York, and Dakar.Poet Airea D. Matthews, whose first collection of poems is the critically acclaimed Simulacra, which received the prestigious 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. Matthews is also the author of Bread and Circus, a memoir-in-verse contending with the realities of class and race, which was awarded The 2024 LA Times Book Prize in Poetry. For her writing and service, Matthews earned a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2022 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship, a 2020 Pew Fellowship, and the 2017 Margaret Walker For My People award. From 2022-2023, she served as Philadelphia’s 6th Poet Laureate. She is an associate professor and co-chairs the creative writing department at Bryn Mawr College, where she was presented the Lindback Distinguished Teaching award.V. Shayne Frederick, leading five professional vocalists who will gather a cappella to enshroud the audience with a medley of sacred and timeless anthems of illumination and remembrance. The ensemble will include Desmond Boyer, Jakeya Limitless, Seraiah Nicole, and Taylor Samuels. V. Shayne Frederick has captivated audiences for nearly 20 years. DownBeat Magazine called him “soulful,” All About Jazz said he’s “a shining light,” and Philadelphia Inquirer hails his "silken baritone and elegant charm.” He’s electrified TEDx, NPR, and international Jazz stages and airwaves. Shayne has produced six albums, and is the primary voice on projects from Ropeadope Records and Outside In Music. Shayne scores for media and tours with Ruth Naomi Floyd’s Frederick Douglass Jazz Works. He’s on faculty at Temple University.DJ Aura hails, from the musically rich city of Philadelphia. Aura has provided the musical backdrop for poetry slams, various art exhibits, b-boy jams, and sneaker exhibitions, proving herself a taste-maker by rocking dance floors throughout the Tri-State area and holding her own amongst Philly's most legendary DJs. She creates a sonic experience that takes folks on a nostalgic, soulful, eclectic journey ranging from classic R&B to Deep House.
