Radical Nonfiction Book Group With Carlo

OFFSITE EVENT: HOLLOW NICKELTuesday, April 22, 7:00 PMRadical Nonfiction Book Group with CarloDiscussing Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur Led by former Greenlight bookseller Carlo, our Radical Nonfiction Book Group meets monthly to read and discuss nonfiction titles related to the issues of history, politics, and the promise of a better world, just around the corner! For April, the group discusses the acclaimed memoir of Assata Shakur—African American revolutionary and member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. An intensely personal and political autobiography, Assata belies the fearsome image of JoAnne Chesimard (now known as Assata Shakur) long projected by the media and the state. With wit and candor, Shakur recounts the experiences that led her to a life of activism and portrays the strengths, weaknesses, and eventual demise of Black and White revolutionary groups at the hand of government officials. The result—a signal contribution to the literature about growing up Black in America that has already taken its place alongside The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the works of Maya Angelou.
