Sunday March 9, 2025 Whether you call it "walking" or "urban hiking," this Moderate (due to length) 6.6-mile loop packs in some of San Diego's best sights, including Balboa Park and the charming neighborhoods of Hillcrest, North Park, and Banker's Hill. The terrain is flat and easily accessible with only a handful of stairs thrown in). If you still want to take a break or two, you'll be passing a plethora of coffee shops, eateries, and watering holes along the way, as well as several museums and everything else Balboa Park has to offer. Distance: 6.6 miles plus 1 Canyon 1+ miles = 8 miles Terrain: mostly flat and STEEP Canyon Facilities: Balboa Park Bring: water, hat, sunscreen, camera, ICE (in case of emergency phone #) Parking: the Zoo has a large parking lot (free), Park Blvd etc... The 1912 Spruce St. suspension bridge. Enjoy the movement when crossing over Kate Sessions Canyon. The 1995 Vermont St. bridge with its words of inspiration to read while crossing Washington Street. It replaced the 1916 wooden-trestle bridge that eased usage of the University trolley line that was the primary transportation line in San Diego from 1888–1949. The seventh bridge: in 1907, a redwood-truss bridge was built after the ridge was cut to allow the streetcar line to extend eastward to Fairmount Ave., opening North Park and other surrounding areas to development.
