A glimpse into the life and observations of New England nature essayist John Burroughs with readings from early 20th century writings at his Slabsides retreat in upstate New York. Nicknamed “Johnnie of the Birds,” Burroughs was a regular guest at Virginia Scripps’ Wisteria Cottage and observed La Jolla’s marine life from the back window, including sea lions he dubbed “hounds of the sea.” Program, presented around the Venturi Pergola in the shadow of Burrough’s gazings, focusses on La Jolla observations but also treats his overall sensibilities to nature and the American natural environment as reflected in ideas of Whitman and Thoreau.
